Hot topics in China
-Bi
Hao (Lucy)
One of my students told
me an interesting saying “I had a bad
China day” which means everything goes
wrong like living in China. Is it China
a difficult place for foreigners? If someone
knows nothing about culture and people
of a country, he will always feel awkward
with the surroundings. Here are some small
tips which may help you to break the ice.
our colleagues
are people whom you meet everyday, like
weather is a popular topic in UK, food
is always a happy topic in China. You
can always tell them your favorite Chinese
dishes and they will tell you theirs.
Please show some interest about what they
like, they will even tell you the recipes
proudly. China has a long history of agriculture
society. Emperors pray for good harvest
every year to make their country stable.
That’s my food has been a hot topic for
ages.
Hometown is also a hot topic
for your colleagues, as everyone has something
to say. China is a big country, every
city, village or town has their special
local products or customs. If you ask
in mandarin: Ni shi na li ren? It will
make a hit. Ask about famous places with
local products and special food in their
hometowns, you can not only make people
happy but also learn knowledge and find
some nice places for holiday.
Business partners outside
your company are very important. At the
beginning of communication, you may talk
about the cooperation in the past and
good hope in the future. If they mention
someone in your company who had business
contact with them you should also show
a bit interest to that person. Make a
pleasant beginning is half of the success.
Chinese like to talk about nice things
first to give people a good impression
first. Of course reality is not that pleasant.
For Ayi and driver, the best topic is
their children. Most of them are over
40years old, children are their favorite
people. Hope your Chinese is good enough
to talk with them.
Please have a try with
self-confidence. You will discover new
things by yourself.
